Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about preparing for, booking, and experiencing the Perlemoen Trail.

❓ Why choose Beachcomber Guide's Perlemoen Trail?

The Perlemoen Trail covers a remote section of the Cape Whale Coast which boasts outstanding wild beauty and unique biodiversity. Your guides are highly qualified FGASA experts in marine ecology, flora, fauna, shipwrecks, and local Khoisan history, making every walk an insightful adventure.

❓ What is Slackpacking, and is it for me?

Slackpacking allows you to hike carrying only a lightweight day pack while your main luggage is transported for you to comfortable guest house accommodation each evening.

❓ Is the Trail difficult?

The trail is rated for medium fitness hikers. It features easy-going daily walking along coastal terrain with no steep mountain climbs and plenty of interpretive breaks to enjoy the scenery.

❓ Why are there specific trail dates?

Our trail dates are uniquely chosen based on optimal low-tide shore conditions and seasonal weather windows to ensure safety, ease of walking, and optimal tide access.

❓ Is the Trail suitable for children?

Yes! Families with children of moderate fitness levels and hiking experience love this trail. The pace is relaxed and educational.

❓ What is the group size? And how do I get an exclusive trail?

Group sizes typically range from 8 to 12 hikers. Group bookings of 10 or more secure an exclusive private trail experience for your party.

❓ How does the price structure work?

Pricing operates on a sliding scale depending on your total group size and whether you select Fully Catered (all meals included) or Self-Catering options. Larger group bookings enjoy lower per-person rates.

❓ What time do we start and finish each day?

Days generally start between 7:30 and 8:00 AM after a breakfast buffet, and conclude by mid-afternoon (approx. 3:00 to 3:30 PM) at Lucky Fish guest house.

❓ What is the best time of year to do this Trail?

Our primary trail seasons run during Spring (September to November - peak whale watching and spring fynbos bloom) and Autumn (March to May - ideal mild coastal weather).

❓ Where do we stay?

Hikers stay at Lucky Fish, a spacious, comfortable private guest house in Pearly Beach reserved exclusively for trail participants.

❓ How does the Trail work?

Each day involves guided coastal hiking with packed lunches and interpretive stops, followed by relaxing evenings at Lucky Fish with catered meals or self-catering braai facilities.
